Could Sam Wilson Really be Captain America? Explained

Can Sam Wilson fill the big shoe of Chris Rogers? Is the story equally captivating as Winter Soldier or Civil War? How does Red Hulk instigate audiences?

I didn’t have much expectations going into the theatre, after all, it’s not a ‘pure’ Captain America Movie. But we can expect something innovative from Marvel, right? The movie fails firstly in the notion that the main powers of the protagonist are not attractive at all. A couple of wings,  now a shield- all do not mold the hero in a spectacular way. Now you can argue that Chris Evans also didn’t have any noteworthy superpower.  But he had his own charisma, and the bravery and honesty themes(who can forget the one with putting himself onto a grenade?). Pushing a side-hero(sorry for upsetting Sam Fans, but until Endgame he was not a main protagonist)into the front does not always work. Some people have some distinguished magic to carry a fully fledged movie on their shoulders like Downy Jr or Chris Evans.  Here, it is neither visually stunning nor thematically appealing. Story and screenplay-wise, it is not very innovative also because the usual cliche troops have been used and have not been developed to a complete arch like Winter Soldier.   Did Marvel think pushing him as the new black superhero would work? Like black Panther? It doesn’t work as that as well, because Black Panther is an established one already. And everybody knows Sam Wilson from long ago. His race doesn’t contribute anything significant at all.

Does that mean everything is bad about this movie? Some things work in bits and pieces. Some action sequences, and the way corporate espionage and politics are shown(you’ll remember Hydra) are praiseworthy. And for the younger viewers, Red Hulk can also work.  It’s kind of an OK-OK movie, not like very bad or extraordinary. But the Captain America vibe we got in the Winter Soldier, you can never compare. I also felt the presentation of Bucky could have been stronger.  One can argue the story here doesn’t revolve around him like the Civil War, but still, a bit more intense and significant characterization of Bucky was expected. If you’re a follower of Marvel Movies, rating-wise wise it can be compared with “Thor the Dark World”., which is considered second class in Marvel standard.

Following the Marvel slate, last year’s “Deadpool and Wolverine” was far better movie than this one. I know their themes and genres are different, but in terms of entertainment value, DnW and GOTG 3 both were superior. We deserve a much better approach and “hero design” from Marvel.

If you are a new Marvel fan, you can give it a one-time go. But if you are a follower of Marvel Movies like me, you can save your time.
